Cars are depreciating assets and stocks are appreciating assets. My parents had invested a small amount of money in Qualcomm in the early 90s. I wanted a new car towards the end of high school and convinced my parents to sell my 100 shares of QCOM in mid-1998 (sold at less than $4 a share). The stock went on to split 8-1 and was trading at over $10 a share even after the tech bubble burst.
