This is Life
In our ongoing series "This is Life", I wanted to share a personal moment that brought a smile to my face with a lot of laughter and introspection. It involved scrambled eggs, omelets, and my middle son Elliot (EJ).
EJ woke me early one Sunday, and stated in a very grave tone “Dad….., I need your help!” We can all relate to how quickly we respond when one of our children expresses a need for help. It’s a calling we willingly rally towards as parents. When I asked him, “What’s the problem?” He responded very seriously, “I’m having an issue making scrambled eggs!” My anxiety level went down, I got up, laughed a little and headed downstairs to see what the “egg issue” involved.
The frying pan was on the oven, the burner was on low, and in the pan was a perfectly made omelet! Elliot had not “scrambled” the eggs while cooking. He thought eggs scrambled themselves! But as we all know it takes a little bit of engineering and creativity to produce perfect scrambled eggs. The amount of milk you add, seasoning, and the amount of “fluffing” you do to the eggs result in extremely different outcomes. Hilarious on many levels, and a realization something as simple as scrambling eggs requires knowledge and experience. I also realized this simple lesson can also translate to the complicated world of financial planning and investing. Like my son, we often meet with prospective clients that believe they have “scrambled eggs” when they, in fact, have an “omelet.” One example is the prospective client believing they are invested conservatively when they are in fact, very aggressive. Or the person retired and taking withdrawals on their portfolio in a range they believe to be “safe” when it is not.
Our process allows us to help people understand their situation so they can recognize the difference between “financial scrambled eggs” and “financial omelets.” Our expertise in writing a plan and creating a blend of investments to support your unique needs requires having a complete understanding of your needs and goals and marrying them to an appropriate risk-managed portfolio. Our process is called True Financial Planning and DRAAMS investment management. You can click here to learn more.
